EDUCATION
University of California, Santa Barbara December 1994
Advisor: Professor Louise E. Moser
Dissertation Title: Totem: A Reliable Ordered Delivery Protocol
for Interconnected Local-Area Networks
University of California, Santa Barbara April 1991
Purdue University May 1985
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
University of California, Berkeley - Berkeley Water Center (BWC) December 2005 - Present
THE LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY
October 1994 - Present
Advanced Computing for Science Department.
THE LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY
July 1993 - August 1993
Network Research Group.
THE GENERAL MOTORS TECHNICAL CENTER
July 1985 - August 1988
Robotics Department.
Project leader for development of off-line robot processing capabilities.
Responsibilities included application of the McDonnell Douglas (McAuto) system
for computer graphic simulations. Instrumental in laying out and verifying
advanced robot workcell concepts for departmental and divisional applications.
Developed software to decode/encode program source code to permit off-line modification
and simulation for robots. Supervised technician and students assigned to the
project. Initiated and chaired corporate Off-Line Robot Processing task force.
ACADEMIC RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Supervised the research and thesis writing of one State University
of Campinas, Brazil Masters student (Evandro deSouza).
Supervised the research, thesis writing, and defense of one Universite
Catholique de Louvain, Belgium PhD student (Olivier Chevassut).
Supervised the research, thesis writing, and defense of one University of
California, Santa Barbara PhD student (Karlo Berket).
Supervised the research, thesis writing, and defense of two San Francisco
State University masters students (Keith Beattie and Marcia Perry).
Developed a communication protocol called Totem for fault-tolerant wide-area networks. This
protocol is used by asynchronous distributed systems that require reliable
ordered delivery of messages. Our implementation of the protocol
showed significant performance advantages over other protocols.
Topics of interest included protocol services,
routing, flow control, failure recovery and membership.
This work included supervision of several Masters students.
Built a graphical display for a communication protocol simulator. Used to
display Trans, Tracks and Total protocols in X windows. This interface was
used in debugging the protocol implementation and
studying protocol performance.
Designed and built automated testing utilities for a multiversion
software experiment.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Introduction to C++ and Introduction to Unix
Responsible for course material, tests, and labs for courses that lasted one week.
ECE 152A: Logic Design and Switching Theory
5 quarter units - 28 students
Had sole responsibility for the course content, homeworks, labs, tests, grading
and assignment of grades. This course introduced the student to
synchronous and asynchronous digital circuit design.
