Management Responsibilities include: Department Head of the Advanced Computing for Science Department and Group Lead of the Data Intensive Systems Group.

Principal investigator on a project studying the feasibility and research issues associated with use of overlay networks to provide new capabilities on the science data network.

Principal investigator on a project developing workflow capabilities for the KDD BLACKBOOK.

Designated Computing Sciences Directorate liason to Department of Homeland Security. Developing relationships and funding opportunities with DHS.

Past projects include

Principal investigator responsible for design and development of software to enhance collaboration between sites connected by a wide-area network. ( http://dsd.lbl.gov/Collaboratories/pcce.html)

Served as the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization ( CTBTO) as an expert in the field of reliable multicast communication. (http://dsd.lbl.gov/~deba/CTBTO/)

Secure and reliable group communication protocols, Self-Configuring Network Monitor, SpectroMicroscopy Collaboratory, the Collaboratory Interoperability Framework, and the Advanced Visualization Communication Toolkit.

Staff Scientist
THE LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY July 1993 - August 1993
Network Research Group.
Designed and developed an analysis tool for Internet multicast routing. The ability to multicast was new to the Internet and still experimental. The debugging tool aided in network configuration and diagnosis of problems.

Project Engineer
THE GENERAL MOTORS TECHNICAL CENTER July 1985 - August 1988
Robotics Department.
Developed a knowledge-based diagnostic expert system for robotic workcells. Specific development issues included integration of cell controller, robot, visi on system, and expert system to provide error diagnosis and recovery. This project addressed the problems of excessive downtime and slow start-ups associated with complex manufacturing cells.
Project leader for development of off-line robot processing capabilities. Responsibilities included application of the McDonnell Douglas (McAuto) system for computer graphic simulations. Instrumental in laying out and verifying advanced robot workcell concepts for departmental and divisional applications. Developed software to decode/encode program source code to permit off-line modification and simulation for robots. Supervised technician and students assigned to the project. Initiated and chaired corporate Off-Line Robot Processing task force.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Thesis Committee/Advisor, Campinas 2001 - 2003
Supervised the research and thesis writing of one State University of Campinas, Brazil Masters student (Evandro deSouza).

Thesis Committee/Advisor, UCL 1998 - 2002
Supervised the research, thesis writing, and defense of one Universite Catholique de Louvain, Belgium PhD student (Olivier Chevassut).

Thesis Committee/Advisor, UCSB 1998 - 2000
Supervised the research, thesis writing, and defense of one University of California, Santa Barbara PhD student (Karlo Berket).

Thesis Committee/Advisor, SFSU Spring 1995 - 1998
Supervised the research, thesis writing, and defense of two San Francisco State University masters students (Keith Beattie and Marcia Perry).

Communication Protocols, UCSB Summer 1991 - Fall 1994
Developed a communication protocol called Totem for fault-tolerant wide-area networks. This protocol is used by asynchronous distributed systems that require reliable ordered delivery of messages. Our implementation of the protocol showed significant performance advantages over other protocols. Topics of interest included protocol services, routing, flow control, failure recovery and membership. This work included supervision of several Masters students.

Visualization of Communication Protocols, UCSB Summer 1990 - Spring 1992
Built a graphical display for a communication protocol simulator. Used to display Trans, Tracks and Total protocols in X windows. This interface was used in debugging the protocol implementation and studying protocol performance.

Multiversion Software, UCSB Fall 1989 - Spring 1990
Designed and built automated testing utilities for a multiversion software experiment.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Instructor, Technical Research Associates Fall 1993 - Fall 1998
Introduction to C++ and Introduction to Unix
Responsible for course material, tests, and labs for courses that lasted one week.

Lecturer, UCSB Summer 1992
ECE 152A: Logic Design and Switching Theory
5 quarter units - 28 students
Had sole responsibility for the course content, homeworks, labs, tests, grading and assignment of grades. This course introduced the student to synchronous and asynchronous digital circuit design.

Teaching Assistant, UCSB Fall 1988 - Spring 1990
